About the artist

Jillian’s process begins in stillness, where she waits for a deep knowing to take

over, and guide her brush across the paper. Writer, Isak Dinese, defines this

knowing as grace which “demands nothing from us but that we shall await it with

confidence and acknowledge it in gratitude.” From this well of stillness, grace, and

gratitude, Jill’s paintings emerge as water and pigment are brushed across paper,

forming simple lines, textures, and colors that transcend their physical representation off the paper into the surrounding space, and viewer. The thin layer of watercolor allows light to pass through and bounce off the white paper, allowing more protons of light to return to the eye than in other modalities,

creating a capacity for a deeper, more energetic connection with the viewer: are

we seeing the painting’s grace or our own?

Jillian paints on paper crafted in France, watermarked with the infinity sign, further

speaking to the infinite essence of her work. Her paintings are not only a representation of nature, but a reuniting of water and trees in new forms. Jillian received her BA in Visual Arts from Bowdoin College; studied figure drawing and printmaking in Rome; continued education in silkscreen at The Museum School in Boston, illustration at Mass Art, and printmaking at UMASS of Dartmouth. She comes from a family of artists and has always lived near (very near) the ocean.
