I am often inspired by music and poetry when creating a painting. This piece was inspired by the music of "Bach's Air in G," as the music to me has a soft ambient feel. Classical composers wrote music differently (often sloppy!), but Bach wrote with fluid penmanship, and I chose to copy Bach's actual handwritten version of the music (rather than formal printing), weaving it in and out throughout the forest to personally capture him in the work and also because his hand writing blends well with the scene. Given my continued inspiration by the vast forested landscape here in Maine, I chose a composition with a misty, autumn morning presence, where I could, from experience, sense the crispness of the air, combined with a warm morning sun and the mist lightly softening the colors; hence the title, "Morning Air."
